Country singer Jason Aldean faces immense backlash for new song and music video – now he is responding back

Country singer Jason Aldean is facing significant backlash over his song “Try That in a Small Town,” with accusations of racism and promoting lynching. The music video for the song was pulled from CMT after airing for three days due to these allegations. Aldean has since responded to the criticism, vehemently denying any racist intent and defending the song’s message.

The controversy began when observers noted that the music video was filmed at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, the site of the 1920s lynching of an African-American man named Henry Choate. The video also features footage of protesters burning American flags, though the origin of this footage is unclear.

In the song, Aldean sings, “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face / Stomp on the flag and light it up / Yeah, ya think you’re tough / Well, try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road.” Some have interpreted these lyrics as encouraging violence against protesters.

Critics, including Variety magazine, have called the song “the most contemptible country song of the decade,” while social media users have labeled Aldean as racist and a bigot. However, Aldean has defended the song, stating that it is simply about the sense of community he experienced growing up.

“There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it,” Aldean said. “While I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music, this one goes too far.”

Aldean also addressed his political views, stating that while he doesn’t hide them, the song is not intended to be political. He emphasized the desire for a return to normalcy and unity in the country as the song’s message.

This is not the first time Aldean has faced controversy. In 2021, he was dropped by his publicity firm after his wife, Brittany Aldean, made transphobic comments on Instagram. Aldean defended his wife’s remarks, sparking further criticism.

The backlash comes amid Aldean’s Highway Desperado tour, which began on July 14. The singer was hospitalized for heatstroke on the second day of the tour, leading to a rescheduled performance.

As the debate over “Try That in a Small Town” continues, Aldean’s fans and critics alike are expressing their opinions on social media. The singer’s response to the backlash has only added fuel to the controversy, with many calling for a deeper examination of the song’s lyrics and message.
